Fusayo Lobsinger won the "Fall basket" donated to the Foundation by Ittner Architects.

On Friday, October 23, 2009, The Grant Middle School "October Rotary Student of the Month" drew two winning tickets for raffle baskets donated to the Grant District 110 Educational Foundation. The winner for the "Fall basket" (donated by Ittner architects in Fairview Heights) was Fusayo Lobsinger who is the lunch ticket person at Illini School. She was very excited to have won and said that she had never won anything in her life. Fusayo shared many of the items in her winning basket with co-workers, family and friends. They all appreciate her kindness and thoughtfulness.

There were actually THREE winners for the Halloween basket (donated by the District 110 Employees Union). Here's why. Jerry Jowet, who is a maintenance custodian for the schools, had bought some tickets just to help the Educational Foundation and put his blank tickets in the raffle ticket container. Someone later wrote his name on the tickets thinking that Jerry should be entitled to win the basket if his ticket is drawn out. Later in the week, Jerry bought some more tickets, only this time he wanted them donated to "anyone who was in a military uniform at either Grandparents' Day at Grant Middle School or at the Fall Festival at Illini Elementary School." Various people in uniform were at the festival but it turned out that an Air Force Master Sergeant was the first to walk by the raffle table. Jerry's offer was explained to the AF Master Sergeant and he gladly filled out the tickets and then asked to meet with Jerry. They exchanged greetings and the Master Sergeant expressed his appreciation for the gesture and then left for the evening.

Later on Oct. 23rd, when the tickets were drawn for the Halloween basket by the October Rotary Student of the month, Jerry's name was drawn out as the winning ticket. Jerry was surprised since he had supposedly only put in blank tickets in the container. He then decided that he wanted his winning basket to go to the Master Sergeant he had previously met. But who was he? Everyone had forgotten or not seen his name. Teachers and staff checked to see if anyone remembered him. Who in the school had parents in the military? He perhaps came with a grandchild or a friend? The weekend passed without much success in finding his name. Finally on Sunday, a process of elimination was used to remove all the known female names, followed by parents who are not in the military, thus leaving 7 remaining tickets. One had a Belleville address and more than likely was not it. The rest were looked up online to see if they were residents of Fairview Heights or in the military. Eventually, the information was narrowed down to two based on phone calls and a final phone call confirmed one man as the mystery Master Sergeant. Arrangements were made to get him, Jerry, and the President of the Foundation, Mr. Gary Crawford together so he could receive his prize. The Master Sergeant is Russel Lindfors who attended the fall festival to listen to one of his children play in the combined bands from Grant Middle School and Pontiac Middle School who entertained the crowd that evening. His children attend Pontiac School. MSgt Lindfors was grateful for Jerry's kind gesture and offered to help the Foundation in the future by donating wood crafted items that he makes in his spare time. Jerry, MSgt Lindfors and the Foundation are all winners in the long run!
